McTomney and Holmes combine for 26 points in MASCAC setback
Westfield, Mass. – The Fitchburg State University women's basketball team dropped a 113-65 decision to the Owls of Westfield State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening at the Woodward Center.

How It Happened
Fitchburg State grabbed an early 8-7 advantage on a pair of layups from senior Michaela McTomney (Bellingham, Mass.) and three ball by sophomore Angelina Marazzi (Manchester, N.H.) before Westfield State regained the lead, going on a 15-0 run, capped by a three pointer from Kierra McCarthy (Ludlow, Mass.) for the 22-8 margin.
In the second quarter, the Owls upped its lead (42-17) as Lucy Barrett (Williamstown, Mass.), Keri Paton (Russell, Mass.) and Alyssa Camara (Quincy, Mass.) collected buckets, but the Falcons cut into the deficit just before the half with freshman Payton Holmes (Carver, Mass.) draining a trey, while McTomney connected on a layup to make the score 53-28 going into the break.
Following the intermission, Fitchburg State continued to battle, cutting the lead to 70-38 on baskets by McTomney, junior Mikala Malboeuf (Fitchburg, Mass.) and newcomer Mishelle Logie (Attleboro, Mass.).
In the final quarter of play, the Green and Gold opened the frame with newcomer Mikaela Mitchell (Millbury, Mass.) connecting on a pair of hoops, but the Owls secured the victory as Ashley Lane (Warrenton, Va.) hit a jumper midway through the stanza, resulting in the 113-65 final.
Inside the Numbers
Fitchburg State shot 27of-64 (42.2%) from the field and 21.7% (5-for-23) from three point range.
Westfield State went 42-of-94 (44.7%) overall, including (17-for-49) 34.7% from beyond the arc.
The Falcons were led by McTomney with a team-leading 14 points and four rebounds, while Holmes added 12 points and two assists.
For the Owls, junior Allison Hester (Sutton, Mass.) led the way with a game-best 17 points and five boards, while senior Alyssa Darling (Palmer, Mass.) chipped in with 16 points and four caroms.
Fitchburg State controlled the glass, holding a 48-45 margin on the boards,
62nd meeting between the two schools on the parquet with the Falcons 14-58 all-time when taking on the Owls.
Westfield State has won the last nine contests against Fitchburg State, including an 101-56 decision earlier this season (1/23/18) at the Parkinson Gymnasium.
Falcons will host the Bears of Bridgewater State University on Saturday for a MASCAC matchup starting at 1:00 P.M. Owls will travel to Worcester State on the same day for a conference tilt at 1:00 P.M.
