Soderlund Captures Senior Scholar Athlete Award
Fitchburg, Mass. – Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation Matthew Burke announced today that Cody Soderlund (Middleborough, Mass.) is the 2021 recipient of the annual Fitchburg State University Department of Athletics Male Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year Award for both his success in the classroom and on the field.
Soderlund, who will graduate in three-years, holds a 3.98 cumulative grade-point-average GPA in Criminal Justice. He has earned MACAC All-Academic status for six straight semesters and was inducted into the National College Athlete Honor Society (NCAHS) this year.
"Cody is an amazing young man, he will have finished his degree in three years and is starting the academy this summer." Says Jim Jellison, head coach men's cross country and track and field. "He had never picked up a pole vault before he arrived at Fitchburg and in three years became one of the top vaulters in the MASCAC. That is the testament to his determination."
Cody is a three-year member of the indoor/outdoor track and field team and a two-year participant of the cross country team. His field events include pole vault and long jump while he also runs the 60M, 200M and backbones the 4X400M relay team. This season Soderlund finished runner-up in the pole vault at the Massachusetts Athletic State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Championship.
