Baseball Sweeps Buccaneers In MASCAC Double Header

Currier blasts grand slam for first collegiate homerun

Buzzards Bay, MA – The Fitchburg State University Baseball team registered a sweep over the Buccaneers of Massachusetts Maritime Academy in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from Hendy Field this afternoon by the scores of 10-3 and 11-1.

How It Happened

Game One

Mass. Maritime jumped out to an early 3-0 advantage in the bottom of the first as Nate Kaczynski and Kevin Heine registered RBI base knocks. Fitchburg State answered in the top of the fourth when senior Maxwell Riordan (Pepperell, MA) drove in junior Jason Kelly (E. Bridgewater, MA) with a bases loaded walk to make the score 3-1.

The Falcons grabbed the lead in the top of the fifth with senior Casey Bellew (Beverly, MA) reaching a bunt that brought in junior Benjamin Rewenko (Burlington, CT), while sophomore Tyler Fonck (Milford, CT) plated Bellew with a single to left field and Riordan drove home Kelly with a sacrifice fly to center field for the 4-3 edge.

The Green and Gold secured the victory in the top of the seventh as graduate student Michael Cooper (Fitchburg, MA) singled through the left side to bring in senior Joseph Abt (Newbury, MA) before junior Liam Currier (Charlestown, RI)) blasted a grand slam homerun to left field, scoring Bellew, senior Brady Campbell (Sandwich, MA) and sophomore Ruairi Rago (Port Jefferson, NY), resulting in the 10-3 final.

Game Two

Fitchburg State took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first with Abt scoring on balk before Cooper laced an RBI single to centerfield to bring in Riordan. The Falcons doubled their advantage in the top of second as Currier notched a two-run single to right center to drive in Bellew and Campbell for the 4-0 margin.

The Green and Gold secured the victory in the top of fourth when Kelly singled to right center, scoring Bellew, while Abt followed with an RBI single down the right field line to drive in Kelly and Fonck crossed the palted on throwing miscue, resulting in the 11-1 final.

By The Numbers

  • Currier paced the Falcons in game one, going 1-for-3 with a homerun, one run scored and four RBI
  • Abt led the way for the Green and Gold in game two, hitting 5-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI
  • In game one, senior Adam Wholley (Londonderry, NH) earned the win for Fitchburg State, allowing three runs (1 earned) on six hits and nine strikeouts in the complete game effort.
  • Senior William Ernst (Worcester, MA) collected the victory for Fitchburg State in game two, yielding one unearned run on three hits and five K's in the complete game effort
