Third-seeded Westfield State University used a single score midway through the first period to post a 1-0 victory over sixth-seeded Fitchburg State University in quarterfinal action of the 2012 MASCAC Men’s Soccer tournament this evening.
Senior Derek Young’s (Falmouth, Mass.) penalty kick conversion in the 24th minute of play held up as the game-winner and backed a five-save effort in goal from fellow senior Brett Young (Falmouth, Mass.) to lift Massachusetts Maritime to a 1-0 MASCAC victory over the Fitchburg State men’s soccer team on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Jason Pereira (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington) netted a pair of goals and added an assist in a five point day as the Fitchburg State men’s soccer team defeated host, Regis College, 3-1 this evening.
It's been a bit of a struggle for Fitchburg State University men's soccer team the past few seasons, a lot of which head coach Werner Thissen attributes to the team's mentality. Thissen is looking to change the team's culture and mind-set, which he feels will improve the Falcon's performance.
