Softball drops games to St. Catherine, Cornell in day 3 of SpaceCoast Spring games

Melbourne, FL – The Fitchburg State University softball team dropped a pair of non-conference games this afternoon at the Space Coast Spring Games, falling to the University of St. Catherine by an 8–0 final before coming up short against Cornell College, 20–1, in the second contest.

Game 1: Fitchburg State 0, St. Catherine 8

Game 2: Fitchburg State 1, Cornell College 20

How It Happened 

Game 1

St. Catherine used a pair of multi-run innings to defeat Fitchburg State, 8–0, in non-conference softball action. The Wildcats opened the scoring in the second inning and broke the game open with three runs in the fourth before adding three more in the fifth. Sophomore infielder Paige Konopka (Middlefield, Conn.) recorded the Rams' lone hit of the contest, while junior Carolyn Brodeur (Ashby, Mass.) and sophomore Ariana Baez (Methuen, Mass.) each drew a walk. Freshman Alison Hazel (Winchendon, Mass.) tossed 4.2 innings in the circle for Fitchburg State, striking out two batters. Helen McKinnon paced the St. Catherine offense with three hits and five RBI as the Wildcats totaled 11 hits in the win.

Game 2 

Fitchburg State fell to Cornell College by a 20–1 final as the Falcons were held to just two hits in the non-conference matchup. Cornell took an early lead in the first inning and broke the game open with four runs in the second before adding multiple runs in each of the final three frames. The Falcons lone run came in the bottom of the second when junior infielder Julia Cooper (Lumberton, N.J.) blasted a solo home run to left-center field. Senior infielderShaelyn Burns (North Attleboro, Mass.) added Fitchburg State's other hit in the contest. In the circle, senior Madison Solt (Salem, N.H.) got the start while freshmen Alison Hazel,Brianna Lynch (Pittsfield, Mass.) and Taylor Marino (North Easton, Mass.) all saw time in relief as Cornell totaled 21 hits to secure the victory.

By the Numbers

  • Junior Julia Cooper belted her first home run of the season (and career) with a solo shot to left-center against Cornell College.

  • Senior Shaelyn Burns recorded one hit against Cornell, accounting for one of Fitchburg State's two hits in the contest.

  • Sophomore Paige Konopka collected the Rams' lone hit in the first game against St. Catherine.

  • Freshman Alison Hazel went 4.2 innings in the circle with two strikeouts against the Wildcats.
