Softball Sweeps Wildcats In Non-Conference Twin Bill
Mueller & Ahearn lead Falcons to non-conference sweep
Fitchburg, MA. – The Fitchburg State softball team swept the Wildcats of Bay Path University in a non-conference double header this afternoon from the Donna Lee Withington Memorial Softball Field by the scores of 10-5 and 8-7.

How It Happened
Game One
Fitchburg State grabbed a 1-0 edge in the bottom of the first as junior Jessica Mueller (Fitchburg, MA) drove in freshman Kiley Connors (Newington, CT) with an RBI groundout. Bay Path knotted the contest 1-1 in the top of the second with Sophie Verrengia connecting on an RBI single to left, scoring Jackie Phillips.
The Falcons regained the advantage in the bottom of the second when newcomer Rylee Freeman (Rockland, MA) laid down a sacrifice that eventually led to sophomore Carolyn Brodeur (Ashby, MA) and freshman Keegan Kelley (Upton, MA) crossing the plate before Mueller laced a bases clearing double to center that brought in newcomer Amaya Carrion (E. Longmeadow, MA), junior Julia Cooper (Lumberton, NJ) and Connors for the 6-1 lead.
The Green and Gold extended the lead to 7-1 in the following frame as sophomore Lauren Ahearn (Danvers, MA) singling up the middle to score Kelley. The Wildcat trimmed the deficit to 8-3 in the top of the fifth as Madison Sunderland doubled down the left field line to bring in Allison Dattilo before Sunderland crossed the plate on fielding miscue.
The Green and Gold secured the victory in the bottom of the sixth when Kelley brought in Mueller with an RBI groundout, while Brodeur added an RBI single up the middle, scoring sophomore Ariana Baez (Methuen, MA), resulting in the 10-5 final.
By The Numbers
- Mueller led the way for the Falcons, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple, two runs scored and four RBI
- Kelley finished 3-for-4 with a double, two runs scored and one RBI
- Senior Madison Solt (Salem, NH) earned the victory for Fitchburg State, allowing five runs (4 earned) on 12 hits and six strikeouts in the complete game effort
Game Two
With the contest knotted at 1-1, Fitchburg State took a 3-1 edge in the bottom of the fifth as Mueller roped an RBI double to center field that drove in newcomer Chloe Bafundo (Southington, CT) before Carrion followed with an RBI single that scored Mueller.
Bay Path answered back in the top of sixth Jenna Boudreau, Phillips, Tristan Perez and Anya Gesin registered RBI's in the frame, but the Falcons regained the lead for good in the bottom of the sixth when Bafundo brought in Ahearn with a sacrifice fly, while Carrion and senior Shaelyn Burns (N. Attleboro, MA) added RBI base knocks, resulting in the 8-7 victory.
