Fitchburg State Rolls Past UMass Dartmouth, 3-0
The Fitchburg State women’s soccer team collected its third consecutive victory, defeating UMass Dartmouth, 3-0 in non-conference action this afternoon. The Falcons are now undefeated in their last 18 home games dating back to the 2005 season.
Kennedy and Taylor lead Falcons to third straight victory of the season
FITCHBURG, Mass. (September 6, 2008) - The Fitchburg State women's soccer team collected its third consecutive victory, defeating UMass Dartmouth, 3-0 in non-conference action this afternoon. The Falcons are now undefeated in their last 18 home games dating back to the 2005 season.
Freshmen Lindsay Taylor (Blythewood, S.C./Blythewood) led the Fitchburg State scoring attack with two goals while classmate Carissa Kennedy (Somerset, Mass./Bishop Stang) registered one goal and one assist. Newcomers Julie Dowson (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop) and Erica Graves (Feeding Hills, Mass./Agawam) were also solid with one assist each.
Fitchburg State opened the scoring late in the first period as Kennedy took a Dowson pass and connected for her first collegiate goal in the 30th minute of the match. The Falcons gained a 2-0 advantage just six minutes later when Taylor avoided a collision with Corsair goalkeeper Jennifer Denker (Holliston, Mass./Holliston) and deposited an empty-netter.
Fitchburg State scored the lone goal of second half as Taylor netted her second goal of the match off a Graves helper to give the Falcons a commanding 3-0 lead. UMass Dartmouth had a great chance to break its scoring silence in the second half, as sophomore Katelyn Tsonis (Dartmouth, Mass./Dartmouth) put a shot on net, but junior captain Elise Gallagher (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford) made a great reverse-kick save to preserve the shutout.
Fitchburg State outshot UMass Dartmouth 18-9 and took a 4-1 advantage in corner kicks. Junior goalkeeper Emily Swan (Franklin, Mass./Franklin) totaled four saves for the Falcons, en route to her first shutout of the season, while Denker notched seven stops for the Corsairs
Fitchburg State (3-0, 0-0 MASCAC) is back in action on Tuesday as it hosts Salve Regina University at 7 p.m. UMass Dartmouth (0-2, 0-0 LEC) will host MIT on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
