Women’s Basketball Upended By Owls In MASCAC Clash
DeSimone nets game-best 21 points for Green & Gold
Westfield, MA. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team dropped an 112-61 decision to the Owls of Westfield State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon from the Woodward Center.

How It Happened
1st quarter
Westfield State grabbed an early 7-0 advantage to open the contest on baskets from Kayley Downie and Caroline Galvani before Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 7-4 as senior Alexis DeSimone (Ashburnham, MA) and classmate Kaelynn Tanner (Lowell, MA) hit layups. The Falcons trimmed the lead to 13-8 when DeSimone and sophomore Malaica Guillaume (Everett, MA) registered buckets, but the Owls took a 26-20 lead with Christine Raymond hitting a free-throw.
The Owls pushed the margin to 40-23 as Tavi Williams notched a layup before the Falcons answered (40-26) with DeSimone knocking down a three-ball. DeSimone connected a layup to make the score 49-38, but the hosts took a 56-40 edge into the break when Downie buried a three-pointer.
3rd quarter
Following the intermission, Westfield State extended the lead to 66-43 with Sophia DeAngelis netting a layup before Fitchburg State responded as junior Madison Dawkins (Haverhill, MA) collected a bucket to make the score 64-43. The Green and Gold trimmed the lead to 71-50 as Tanner hit a three-ball and senior Mikayler Patch (N. Attleboro, MA) collected a layup, but the Owls upped the margin to 83-55 as Downie converted a layup and free-throw.
4th quarter
The Falcons cut the deficit to 86-57 with DeSimone connecting on a pair of free-throws before the hosts secured the victory when Cameron Bradford registered a layup, resulting in the 112-61 final.
Inside the Numbers
- Falcons were paced by DeSimone with a game-best 21 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals
- Tanner added 16 points, seven boards, two assists and two steals.
- For the Owls, Downie finished with a team-leading 20 points and one block
- Alexa Davis chipped in with 14 points
- Fitchburg State shot 22-for-60 (36.7%) from the field and (5-of-23) 21.7% from three-point range
