Women's Basketball Upended By Beacons In Non-Conference Action

Augmon nets team-best 11 points for Green & Gold

Boston, MA. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team dropped a 93-34 decision to the Beacons of UMass Boston this afternoon in non-conference action from the Clark Athletic Center.

How It Happened

1st quarter

UMass Boston grabbed a 5-0 edge as sophomore Ashleigh Lagor (Millbury, MA) hit a three-pointer and junior Jordis Tautalatasi (Springfield, MA) added a layup before Fitchburg State answered back with a three ball from senior Kaelynn Tanner (Lowell, MA) to make score 5-3. The Beacons upped the to advantage to 14-3 with a jumper by junior Hialeah Turner-Foster (Mashpee, MA), but the Falcons cut the deficit to 14-8 when freshman Kyelah Smith (Bloomfield, CT) netted a layup and Tanner added two free-throws.

2nd quarter

The hosts opened the second quarter on a 14-0 run, capped by a pair of free-throws from Lagor for the 28-8 edge before the Green and Gold answered with a layup by junior Monet Augmon (New London, CT). The Falcons trimmed the lead to 33-13 with Augmon and Tanner hitting buckets, but the Beacons took a 41-13 margin into the break as newcomer Kaydie Sturm (Coconut Creek, FL) hit a three-pointer.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State reduced the lead to 45-15 with Smith connecting on a layup before UMass Boston pushed the margin to 58-15 on a three ball by Sturm. The Green and Gold answered back with senior Mikayler Patch (North Attleboro, MA) notching a bucket, but the Beacon upped the lead to 60-17 as Turner-Foster registered a basket.

4th quarter

The Falcons trimmed the deficit to 83-31 as Augmon, Patch and freshman Madeleine Devin (Marshfield, MA) registered free-throws, while Smith added a layup before the Beacons secured the victory on a bucket by senior Kayla Jackson (Saugus, MA), resulting in the 93-34 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were led by Augmon with a team-leading 11 points and one rebound
  • Smith and Tanner finished with nine points each for the Green and Gold
  • For the Beacons, Sturm finished with a game-best 25 points, two caroms and two assists
  • Tautalatasi chipped in with 16 points, one board, three assists and one steal
  • Fitchburg State shot 9-for-46 (19.6%) from the field and (2-of-19) 10.5% from three-point range
  • UMass Boston went 38-of-69 (55.1%) overall and (9-for-24) 37.5% for beyond the arc
  • Beacons finished with a 45-24 margin on the glass
