Women's Basketball Topped By Pilgrims In Non-Conference Tilt

Smith finishes with team-leading 11 points for Green and Gold

Henniker, NH. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team dropped a 75-54 decision to the Pilgrims of New England College this afternoon in non-conference action from the Bridges Gymnasium.

How It Happened

1st quarter

New England College raced out to an early 16-2 edge on a basket from senior Ajayah Lively (Victorville, CA) before Fitchburg State answered with buckets by junior Madison Dawkins (Haverhill, MA) and classmate Monet Augmon (New London, CT) to make the score 16-6.

2nd quarter

The Falcons cut the deficit to 30-18 as senior Kaelynn Tanner (Lowell, MA) and freshman Avery James (Attleboro, MA) knotted down three-balls, but the Pilgrims pushed the advantage to 37-24 with Lively connecting on a layup. The Green and Gold responded with a jumper from senior Alexis DeSimone (Ashburnham, MA) to make the score 37-26 before the hosts took a 46-28 lead into the break on a pair of free throws by junior Camryn Lewis (Taunton, MA).

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 48-34 on baskets by DeSimone and sophomore Mary Keohane (North Chelmsford, MA) before New England College extended the margin to 58-40 when sophomore Amanda Davila (West Palm Beach, FL) netted a jumper.

4th quarter

The Falcons trimmed the lead to 68-45 as James hit a layup and newcomer Kyelah Smith (Bloomfield, CT) sank a pair from the charity stripe, but the Pilgrims secured the victory as freshman Jennifer Orisma (Miami, FL) registered a layup, resulting in the 75-54 final.

  • Falcons were led by Smith with a team-best 11 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals
  • James added ten points, three boards and two steals for the Green and Gold
  • For the Pilgrims, Lively finished with a game-leading 18 points, three rebounds, three assists, tow steals and one block
  • Junior Xitlali Montesino (Watsonville, CA) chipped in with 11 points, four caroms, three assists and three steals
  • Fitchburg State shot 18-for-54 (33.3%) from the field and (6-of-19) 31.6% from three-point range
  • New England College went 30-of-60 (50.0%) overall and (7-for-18) 38.9% for beyond the arc
  • Pilgrims finished with a 42-27 margin on the glass
