Women's Basketball Drops Conference Tilt To Lancers

Keohane collects team-leading 15 points for Green & Gold

Worcester, MA. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team suffered a tough 60-50 setback to the Lancers of Worcester State this evening in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action from the Brissette Court.

How It Happened

1st quarter

Worcester State opened the contest with a 6-2 advantage on buckets from junior Lena Waldron (Quincy, MA), senior Hannah Lomonaco (Northbridge, MA) and junior Alana Smith (Chicopee, MA) before Fitchburg State knotted the score at 14-14 with freshman Kyelah Smith (Bloomfield, CT), junior Monet Augmon (New London, CT), sophomore Mary Keohane (North Chelmsford, MA) and senior Alexis DeSimone (Ashburnham, MA) netting baskets as well as a three-ball by senior Kaelynn Tanner (Lowell, MA).

2nd quarter

The Falcons grabbed a 25-19 edge midway through the second quarter with Tanner hitting a layup and a three pointer from Keohane, but the Lancers regained the lead as Smith knocked down a pair of layups. The Green and Gold answered back though when Smith and DeSimone notched jumpers for the 35-29 margin before the hosts trimmed the lead to 35-33 going into the break on a layup by freshman Derin Tokcan (Istanbul, TR).

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Worcester State grabbed the lead back (41-35) on a bucket from junior Mia Haynes (Worcester, MA) before Fitchburg State responded with baskets from DeSimone and Smith to make the score 47-41.

4th quarter

The Lancers pushed the lead to 54-41 with Haynes connecting on two free-throws before the Falcons answered on a Keohane layup. The hosts secured the victory however when sophomore Emma Quinn (Wakefield, MA) hit a jumper, resulting in the 60-50 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were paced by Keohane with a team-best 15 points, six rebounds, one assist and three steals
  • Smith added nine points, four caroms, two assists, one steal and one block
  • For the Lancers, Haynes finished with a game-leading 19 points, seven boards, two assists, three steals and two blocks
  • Lomonaco chipped in with 11 points, ten rebounds, two assists and two steals
  • Fitchburg State shot 19-for-59 (32.2%) from the field and (5-of-18) 27.8% from three-point range
  • Worcester State went 26-of-57 (45.6%) overall and (3-for-13) 23.1% for beyond the arc
  • Lancers finished with a 44-31 margin on the glass
