Women's Basketball Rebounds Over Trailblazers In MASCAC Action

Smith nets career best 19 points for Green & Gold

North Adams, MA. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team defeated the Trailblazers of MCLA, 50-47 in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this afternoon from the Amsler Center.

 The Basics

How It Happened

1st quarter

Fitchburg State raced out to a 10-2 advantage on a pair of buckets from senior Mikayler Patch (N. Attleboro, MA) and junior Monet Augmon (New London, CT) before MCLA trimmed the deficit to 10-8 as senior Ashlyn Bill (Norwich, CT), sophomore Abigail Scialabba (Williamstown, MA) and junior Dakota Quick (Connelly, NY) registered two free-throws each.

2nd quarter

The Trailblazers knotted the contest at 10-10 with Bill netting a layup, but the Falcons responded with a three-ball by senior Kaelynn Tanner (Lowell, MA) and a jumper from freshman Kyelah Smith (Bloomfield, CT) for the 15-10 lead. The hosts cut the lead to 19-12 when senior Hailey Peabody (West Springfield, MA) notched a jumper before the Green and Gold took a 21-12 edge into the break on a Smith layup.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, MCLA trimmed the deficit to 28-19 as Peabody drained a three-pointer before Fitchburg State pushed the lead to 32-19 when freshman Madeleine Devin (Marshfield, MA) connected on a pair from the charity stripe and Smith added a layup. The Falcons upped the lead to 36-23 with freshman Avery James (Attleboro, MA) hitting a jumper, but the Trailblazer answered back as Quick hit a layup to make the score 36-25.

4th quarter

MCLA trimmed the lead to 48-47 when Scialabba buried a three-pointer, but Fitchburg State secured the victory with Augmon connecting a layup, resulting in the 50-47 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were paced by Smith with a game best 19 points, ten rebounds, two assists, three steals and one block
  • James added eight points, three boards, one assist, two steals and one block for the Green and Gold
  • For the Trailblazers, Peabody finished with a team-leading 15 points, 13 caroms, two assists and six steals
  • Scialabba chipped in with ten points, two rebounds, four assists and one block
  • Fitchburg State shot 19-for-73 (26.0%) from the field and (3-of-28) 10.7% from three-point range
  • MCLA went 13-of-55 (23.6%) overall and (3-for-22) 13.6% for beyond the arc
  • Falcons finished with a slim 52-49 margin on the glass
