Macchioni stops 33 shots for Green & Gold

Fitchburg, Mass. –Fitchburg State University men's ice hockey suffered a 2-0 setback to Westfield State in MASCAC action on Saturday evening at the Wallace Civic Center. 

Before today's game, the Falcons proudly honored their senior class — Declan Bronte, Christian Halbig, Max Macchioni, Jeremy Maillet, Jack Saavedra, Nolan Sargent, and Trenton Skaggs — for their dedication and commitment to the program.

How It Happened.

After a strong opening stretch that featured shots from Hunter Dunn, Jack Saavedra and Tye Battipaglia, Fitchburg State fell behind 1-0 at the 6:22 mark of the first period. The Falcons responded with sustained zone time and continued to win key faceoffs, as Jeremy Maillet and Jackson Collins were strong at the dot, but the score remained 1-0 through two periods.

The Falcons pushed to equalize in the third, recording 13 shots in the stanza, including attempts from Aleksei Filimonov, Christian Halbig and Marcus Macchioni. However, an early third-period goal extended the deficit to 2-0.

Fitchburg State University has secured the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Ice Hockey Tournament. The Falcons will await the results of Thursday's quarterfinal matchups to determine their semifinal opponent. The Green and Gold will host the MASCAC semifinals on Saturday, February 27th at 4:00 p.m.
