Women's Basketball Upended By Vikings In Conference Tilt

DeSimone nets team-best 12 points for Green & Gold

Salem, MA. – The Fitchburg State Women's Basketball team dropped an 85-44 decision to the Vikings of Salem State in Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) action this evening from the Twohig Gymnasium.

How It Happened

1st quarter

Salem State opened the contest with an 8-2 edge on a bucket from senior Ernida Goncalves (Everett, MA.) before Fitchburg State cut the deficit to 8-4 as senior Mikayler Patch (North Attleboro, MA) netted a layup. The Vikings pushed the lead to 21-4 when senior Shakera Fullenwilder (Phenix City, AL) notched a bucket, but the Falcons trimmed the margin to 21-9 with senior Alexis DeSimone (Ashburnham, MA) buried a three-ball and freshman Madeleine Devin (Marshfield, MA) added a layup.

2nd quarter

The Green and Gold reduced the margin to 33-24 as freshman Kyelah Smith (Bloomfield, CT) and DeSimone hit layups as well as a three-pointer from senior Kaelynn Tanner (Lowell, MA) before senior Lamia Ashley (Norwalk, CT) extended the advantage to 35-26 for the Vikings going into the break.

3rd quarter

Following the intermission, Fitchburg State continued to battle when Patch, DeSimone and Smith connected on baskets to trim the lead to 37-31, but Salem State answered back as Goncalves registered a layup for the 51-38 lead.

4th quarter

The Falcons responded when Tanner buried another three-ball and freshman Avery James (Attleboro, MA) hit a layup before the hosts secured the victory as Fullenwilder netted a layup, resulting in the 85-44 final.

Inside the Numbers

  • Falcons were paced by DeSimone with a team best 12 points, four rebounds, one assist and four steals
  • Tanner added nine points and sis caroms
  • For the Vikings, senior Maria Orfanos (Lynn, MA) finished with a game-best 19 points, five rebounds, two assists, five steals and one block
  • Fullenwilder chipped with 17 points, six boards and three steals
  • Fitchburg State shot 16-for-56 (28.6%) from the field and (5-of-20) 25.0% from three-point range
  • Salem State went 37-of-82 (45.1%) overall and (1-for-16) 10-14% from beyond the arc
  • Vikings finished with a 57-32 margin on the glass
